Secret Duo Review: Elisa’s Cienna Treatment

Hi everyone, I’m Elisa (@elisabuntha), and I post lifestyle, fashion and travel content on Instagram. I’m also the owner of La Savoir, a casual dining restaurant serving up local French delicacies.

If you’re like me, juggling a busy schedule and frequent travel, you might find what I’m about to share intriguing! Constantly transitioning between various climates can lead to skin dryness and sensitivity and enduring the dry air on flights only exacerbates these issues. As someone constantly on the move, I’ve faced my fair share of skincare challenges like dryness and enlarged pores. However, I’ve recently discovered a new treatment that has helped me tackle these concerns head-on.

The Secret Duo treatment is designed with rejuvenation in mind. Equipped with a 1540nm fractional erbium glass laser as well as a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling function, this machine provides versatile and flexible treatments for every patient. It uses non-ablative fractional technology to address various skin concerns like acne, acne scars, wrinkles and more, helping you achieve great results with minimal downtime and pain.

Sounds pretty great doesn’t it? I’ve heard good things from my friends who’ve tried this treatment so when Cienna Aesthetics reached out to me for an opportunity to try this technology, I was more than happy to give it a shot!

My skincare journey with Cienna started with an in-depth consultation with the founder and medical director, Dr Choong. He assessed my skin with great patience, asking me about my skin concerns, lifestyle as well as pointing out areas we could work on.

Dr Choong explained, that since the Secret Duo machine was so versatile, it was suitable to help me with my dryness and enlarged pores. The fractional erbium glass laser can precisely target the superficial layer of the skin, promoting controlled micro-injuries through dermal thermal heating without any damage to the skin’s surface. This process triggers the skin’s natural healing mechanism, stimulating collagen production.

Now we all know about collagen’s role in keeping up a youthful appearance. However, did you know that collagen also plays a crucial part in maintaining our skin’s hydration levels? Certain collagen fragments help encourage your skin cells to produce more hyaluronic acid, boosting your skin’s water content and thus refreshing your skin with a huge dose of moisture.

In addition to helping with dryness, the laser can also be used for:

  • Active Acne
  • Atrophic Scar
  • Acne Scars
  • Wrinkle Reduction
  • Skin Lifting & Tightening
  • Tone & Texture Improvement

A little about HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)

RF microneedling on the other hand, delivers controlled radiofrequency energy at various depths – ranging from 0.5mm to 3.5mm through gold-plated, medical-grade needles. It works at a deeper level, further stimuating collagen synthesis through higher volumetric heating and deep heat diffusion. I was told that this would help reduce the appearance of my pores and provide an additional skin-tightening effect which is always welcomed!

Other benefits of RF Microneedling include:

  • Non-surgical Face Lifting
  • Wrinkle Reduction
  • Removing Acne Scars, Scars, Spider Veins and Stretch Marks

After the consultation, I was brought into a separate treatment room where one of the friendly aestheticians gently cleansed my face before applying some medical-grade numbing cream. While we gave the topical anaesthesia sufficient time to work (roughly 40 mins), I simply relaxed in the room, with aestheticians checking up on me intermittently to offer me drinks and snacks, making sure I was as comfortable as I could be.

The Treatment Process

Once the topical anaesthesia took effect, Dr Choong came in to check if I was ready for the treatment. He made sure to let me know when he was beginning the process and informed me of the different steps he was taking to ensure that I felt comfortable and understood the what was going on while I had my eyes closed.

We first went in with the RF microneedling before completing the treatment with the laser as the laser could also help the healing process, reducing the treatment’s downtime. If sticking needles into your skin sounds painful to you, you would be right. However, with the help of the numbing cream and Dr Choong’s expertise, it was not as painful as I expected!

(I did end up tearing a little, and Dr Choong took little breaks to make sure I was alright and help wipe my tears before we continued, but what’s beauty without a little pain?)

After Dr Choong was done, I was given post-treatment instructions to follow. This included no skincare with active ingredients (exfoliators, chemical peels, AHAs, BHAs, etc) as well as hot showers, baths or sauna. Of course, I had to take extra care of my skin as well by applying sun protection everyday. Lastly, I was warned that the redness post-treatment might linger and was advised not to engage in vigorous exercise until the redness went away.

Though the redness pretty much subsided after a day, I decided not to risk it and only begun exercising 2 days after. The post-treatment care was pretty low-effort and I was able to return back to my normal routine pretty quickly after.

Follow Up

About a month has now passed since my first Secret Duo treatment and I can say for certain that my skin condition has definitely improved! I’ve noticed that my pores look smaller, my skin looks tightened which helped defined my jawline and my skin tone is more even and less dry.

A huge thank you to Dr Choong and the team at Cienna Aesthetics for making this experience a comfortable and memorable one!
